January Meeting Recap

Such a great first meeting of 2020 led by our new President, Julie Tuller!
If you missed it, here's a little recap...
1. We started out the meeting with Patti Coppock showing us the completed quilt top for our QuiltCon 2020 Charity Quilt Challenge. The theme is "Text" using a palette of gray, white and black. Big thanks to Patti & Jane Bray Swanson for heading this up and to everyone who helped.
2. We welcomed 2 new (old) members back with us - Deidre Egglmann & Jackie Brewer. We also had 5 visitors join us.
3. Thank you to Southwood Quilt Show committee, Deneisha Johnson, April Smith, Kim Shannon & Shannon Spicer, and thank you to those who helped set up and will be working the show Friday and Saturday.
4. Julie gave a recap of the member survey results that was conducted late last year. Things that stood out were:
This is a great group of people doing great things!
Want a more structured meeting
More outside talent - speakers, workshops
Utilize talent within the guild
Better/more consistent communication
More small group activities
5. We will be highlighting a benefit of membership in the national MQG each month. Julie shared that one of her favorite things are the free patterns. If you haven't already, sign up for the emails at www.modernquiltguild.com
6. We will continue to make and donate NICU quilts this year, with donations being made to Hillcrest Hospital.
7. Blocks from last year's Flying Geese block exchange were distributed. Everyone had fun looking through the blocks they received and thinking about what to make.
8. Julie did a presentation on "low volume" fabrics and it was very eye opening for many of us. Kelli Heath's heart quilt was shown as an example.
We then broke into 3 groups and had an exercise in color theory using low volume and favorite color scraps that we brought. It was fun playing and coming up with a pleasing palette and seeing what the others did.
9. After the exercise, those who brought 56 low volume charm squares were invited to the back table to grab their mixed pile to take home. It will be fun to see what we all decide to do with them!
10. Julie gave us a teaser that she and Linda Cameron will be having a UFO Challenge this year, with more details to come soon. So start making a list of your UFOs!
11. We ended the evening with Show and Tell.
