May Meeting Recap

Our May general membership meeting was all about BOLD COLOR & PRINT.  Keeping with the theme, we had a color coded ice breaker activity to kick off the meeting.  We lined up (well, made a circle really) by putting ourselves in color coded order based on the color of our shirts, with multicolor shirts being the transition from one color to another.  Fun!

Membership Chair April Smith announced we had 5 new members join since our last meeting bringing our total membership to 79.  It is so exciting to meet so many quilters and watch our guild grow.  Welcome to all of our new members!

Vice President Cindi Kneff collected the "circle of friends" blocks of the month and reported in March and April our guild completed 31 donation quilts.  We are on track to meet our goal for 2017!

Past President Julie Tuller is going to chair a new committee to design and create a quilted banner with our new logo.  We have been inspired by so many modern guilds out there who have made gorgeous banners.  Check some out for yourself on Instagram and Google.  This will be a fun project.  If you are interested in joining the fun please contact Julie Tuller or Secretary Kelli Heath.

We spent some time over the past couple of months talking about who we are as a guild and defining our mission.  The new mission statement of the Tulsa Modern Quilt Guild was unveiled tonight:

Our mission as the Tulsa Modern Quilt Guild is to create a community that promotes the art of modern quilting through education and community outreach, inspires creativity, and supports individual growth.

Every month we have door prize giveaways.  These are handmade items made by our guild members.  Tonight's lucky winners were Kelly, Beth, and Jane!

The highlight of our May meeting was most definitely the informative and hilariously entertaining presentation on Use of Bold Colors and Prints by our very own Patti Coppock
Patti Coppock
Use of Bold Color and Prints

Patti shared with us her process for finding inspiration, how she thinks about color, and selecting colors based on what inspires you.  The quote she shared from Austin Kleon's 'Steal Like an Artist' TedTalk really resonated with many and is worthy of restatement here.

“Nothing is original, so embrace influence, collect ideas, and remix and re-imagine to discover your own path… What a good artist understands is that nothing comes from nowhere. All creative work builds on what came before. Nothing is completely original.”  - Austin Kleon

As you can see from the before and after photos, Patti's process is critical!

Patti finds her inspiration everywhere!  If you follow her on Facebook you know that she posts daily nature photos.  This is one of the ways she is inspired in addition to items around the house, around town, in art, and in everyday life.

Inspiration is everywhere!

She also shared with us ways of isolating the colors, pulling fabrics, and editing your fabric pull.  A copy of her PowerPoint can be viewed on the member's only guild Facebook page.

Patti and her awesome awesome grandchildren.

And of course, no presentation would be complete without taking the opportunity to show off your grandchildren!  Am I right??

Here are some gorgeous examples of Patti's use of bold colors & prints in her quilts:

Tonight was the big reveal for our Vice President's 2017 Pantone Color of the Year Greenery Mini Quilt Challenge. Several members participated and had fun showing off their minis.
