January Meeting Recap

Welcome to 2018!

We had a great meeting at our new space on January 4th to kick off the New Year. Thanks to all of the members and visitors for coming out. We had 35 members and 9 visitors in attendance.

Our 2018 meetings will include a "10 Minute Tip" segment. Big thanks to Mary Perisho for being our first presenter! Mary gave us several tips, including showing some of her favorite notions and machine cleaning tips.

Each year the TulsaMQG chooses a local organization to be the recipient of donation quilts made by guild members. Throughout the year, members make quilts which are then given our annual charity. Board President, Cindi Kneff announced that our 2018 recipient is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Tulsa's Saint Francis Hospital! We are very excited to partner with the NICU at St. Francis to provide quilts to babies who graduate from intensive care after an extended stay. We've been told there are over 800 babies that are in the NICU each year at St. Francis alone! The 2018 Board Members displayed quilts that each of us made as examples. Already there has been a lot of discussion on our private Facebook page of patterns, projects and ways the guild can work together to get lots of these baby quilts made throughout the year!

The Southwoods Quilt & Fiber Arts Show took place this past weekend at Southwoods Nursery. Last year, guild member Deneisha Johnson volunteered to take charge of organizing this event for TulsaMQG. What a huge undertaking!! The show featured displays of member and non-member quilts, multiple vendors, featured artists, a vintage quilt display and even alpacas. I've been told the viewer turnout surpassed previous shows and even included some guests coming from out of state. Thank you Deneisha for all of your hard work - you did a great job! And thank you to all of the guild members who volunteered your time and displayed your quilts!!

We'll be showing more pictures from the show in an upcoming post.

One of our favorite segments of every meeting is Show & Tell and this month was no exception!
Kelli's sweet baby quilt she made as a donation quilt.

Kelli's Long Time Gone scrappy quilt that she's gifting her a friend for her birthday. Such an amazing gift!

Becky's "Navajo" quilt that she matchstick quilted and hung in the Southwood's show with much ooo-ing and ahhh-ing.

"Beauty" by Todd, who created his own paper-pieced pattern for the letters (some of which have 16 pieces per letter!)

Todd's daughter Hannah visited the Guild and showed off her first project - a Christmas gift for her mom. Great job Hannah. Keep sewing and come back and join us again!

Kari took one of the 2017 Block-Of-The-Month donation blocks and turned them into this tree quilt.
It's being donated to our 2017 Charity - Youth Services of Tulsa.

And last, but certainly not least in the Show & Tell segment was the in-person viewing of TulsaMQG's 2018 QuiltCon submission. This piece (which I failed to get adequate pictures of) was the brainchild of Patti Coppock, with Julie Tuller & Shawna Gehres pitching in. These three ladies organized sew days throughout last year and because of their hard work and the efforts of many other guild members, we have another amazing quilt to send off to QuiltCon. Thank you ladies & other guild members who pitched in for doing such a fantastic job!

Here is "9,999 Problems, But A Stitch Ain't One"

There are literally 10,000 pieces in this quilt. Each of those three inch blocks
are made up of multiple pieces, some with up to 18 pieces per block!

The last portion of our January meeting consisted of roundtable discussions with members to receive input on what members would like to see happen in the guild this year, where members would like to volunteer, input on what members consider to be important, and discussions on bringing in national/international speakers. The Board will be meeting soon to discuss and take under advisement the input received and implement plans for the coming year. If members have any additional input, please let us know! Feel free to message the guild via FaceBook or via email.

We are looking forward to a GREAT 2018!
