November Meeting Recap

President Kris Farnsworth kicked off the November meeting with introductions and some information about our trial location.  We are currently looking for a new home for our meetings and tonight we visited Tandy Family YMCA.

Throughout the year we have focused on several aspects of modern quilting, including:

  • use of bold colors/prints;
  • high contrast;
  • improvisational piecing;
  • minimalism;
  • expansive negative space;
  • alternate grid work;
  • modern traditionalism; and
  • pop-culture influence.

At this month's meeting, our President gave us a visual pop-quiz on these aspects via....

Date that Quilt!

We viewed a number of vintage and modern quilts and identified the aspects of modern quilting which were present in each and then tried to determine if they were vintage or modern.  Several quilters tricked us more than once!  It was a fun recap to the year and a great test of the knowledge we have gained!

Tulsa MQG is currently 82 members strong and continuing to grow!  We are welcoming new members every month.  Membership dues for 2018 are due by the December 7th meeting.  You are welcome to join or to continue your membership by clicking on the PayPal link in the right hand margin of the screen or you can pay by check at the December meeting.  Membership information will be updated with the Modern Quilt Guild in January so timely payment is important to ensure you get the most out of your local and national memberships.

Our 2018 Board Elections were held this month.  Congratulations and Thank You to our new Board members:

We are looking forward to expanding committee participation in 2018.  Please contact any Board member if you have a particular interest.  There will be more information to come!

The 2017 President's Challenge mini quilts were displayed.  The challenge was to create a 24”x24” square mini quilt using whatever technique or fabrics you want and your inspiration must be a cereal box.

A great time was had by all at the 4th Annual Tulsa MQG Fall Retreat last month!  As usual the retreat was held at Camp Egan in Tahlequah, OK.  We had so many fantastic sponsors!  Thank you Alison Glass, Amy Butler Design, Aurifil Thread, BlueFig Sewing, C&T Publishing, Cloud9 Fabrics, Coats & Clark, Daylight Company, Elizabeth Hartman, Havel's Sewing, Jaybird Quilts, June Tailor, Mettler USA, ToolTron, Sulky Threads, Noodlhead Patterns, Martelli, Shannon Fabrics for your amazing products and your continued support.  A special thank you also to our local quilt shops, Owl & Drum, B-Sew Inn, and Sew Much More Fabrics.  Without all of you our retreat would not be so amazing!!  This is currently the only fundraiser our guild has each year so we truly appreciate everyone's continued support.
