June Meeting Recap

June proved to be an exciting an informative meeting.

Tulsa Modern Quilt Guild has completed more than 22 donation quilts so far this year for Youth Services of Tulsa Transitional Living Program.  Click on the Donation Quilts tab at the top of the page for more information about our 2017 charity.

We discussed our plan for the QuiltCon Charity Quilt 2018 Challenge.  We are very excited about our ideas, but like to keep those under wraps until the big reveal at QuiltCon.  This is the only hint we will give (for now)...

Tulsa MQG member, Todd Johnston, presented this month on The Influence of Pop Culture on Modern Quilts.  Todd defined high culture, folk culture, and pop culture and discussed examples of pop culture from the 1940's, 50's, 60's, and 70's.  He also provided several sample quilt reference photos including The Tardis from Doctor Who, Donkey Kong, the Starship Enterprise, and of course, Woody Guthrie.

We were so fortunate to welcome Leo Ransom as our guest presenter.  Leo Ransom is a Quilting Portraiture Artist, as well a traditional quilter. He makes extremely unique portraits, which are immediately recognizable and intricately crafted.  He shared many of his quilts with us.  So much talent and creativity.  It was a pleasure.

Our President Kris Farnsworth issued his 'Inspiration' themed President's Challenge to the guild.  As an example that inspiration for a quilt can come from a wide range of sources, Kris shared a stunning mini recently created by Tulsa MQG member Kari Bloom.

The inspiration.....

The quilt....

The Challenge:

  • Create a 24”x24” square mini quilt
  • Due at the November meeting
  • Use whatever technique you want (applique, piecing, trapunto, etc.)
  • Use whatever fabrics you like (cotton prints, batiks, recycled garments, etc.)
  • You can do improvisational piecing or use whatever quilt blocks you choose
  • The only catch is that your inspiration must be A CEREAL BOX!!

See you next month!
